Root Canal Procedure: What to Expect

During your root canal treatment, the dentist will begin by administering a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort and a pain-free experience. Once the area is numb, the dentist will drill into the tooth to reach the canal containing the infected root. This canal is then carefully cleaned and disinfected, with medication applied to eliminate any lingering infection.

Next, the dentist will fill the canal with a material called Gutta-Percha, a rubber-like substance that is approved by the FDA for dental applications.

After filling the canal, the area is packed with small cotton pellets and sealed with a temporary crown. This temporary crown will stay in place for 2 to 3 weeks while the tooth heals, during which time a custom permanent crown will be created for you.

Once the healing period is over, the permanent crown will be securely cemented onto the remaining structure of the tooth.

Generally, most root canal treatments require two visits: one for the canal procedure and another for the placement of the crown. However, the duration of the canal procedure may vary based on the condition and structure of the tooth.
