Root Canal Procedure: What to Expect

During your root canal procedure, the dentist will administer a local anesthetic to ensure a comfortable and pain-free experience. Once the area is numb, the dentist will drill into the tooth to access the canal housing the infected root. This canal is then meticulously cleaned and disinfected. Medication is placed inside to eradicate any remaining infection.

Following this, the dentist will fill the canal with a material known as Gutta-Percha, a rubber-like substance that is FDA-approved for dental use.

After the canal is filled, the area is packed with small cotton pellets and sealed with a temporary crown. This temporary crown will remain in place for 2 to 3 weeks while the tooth heals, during which time a permanent crown will be custom-made for you.

Once the healing period is complete, the permanent crown will be securely cemented over the remaining structure of the tooth.

Typically, most root canal treatments require two appointments: one for the canal procedure and another for the crown placement. However, depending on the tooth's condition and structure, the canal procedure may occasionally take longer.
